Pet Import Requirements in Latvia

Requirements regarding the import of dogs, cats and pet skunks into the Europan Union area, including Latvia, from the USA, if the number of animals does not exceed 5 animal unit.

1. Identification
Dogs, cats and pet skunks must be identified with a tattoo, electronic identification system or microchip. If the microchip does not comply with standards of the International Standardization Organization (standards 11784 or ISO standard 11785 Annex A), the individual responsible for the animal must have personal scanner of the microchip on hand.

2. Vaccination against rabies
Dogs, cats and pet skunks have to be vaccinated against rabies. The pet must be vaccinated at least 30 days before departure.

3. Health certificate
Upon importing pets into Latvia, it is necessary to obtain a health certificate, issued by an official veterinarian of the respective state. The health certificate must be completed in Latvian, Russian or English. If the destination country is not Latvia, this certificate can be completed in English or the state's official language.

If the number of animals exceeds 5, then the animals must be presented for official veterinary examination at the respective veterinary border control posts.
