Pet Import Requirements in Italy

Cats and dogs are subject to specific regulations (EC) No.998/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council. Psittacine birds (parrots and parakeets): it is allowed, when travelling with the owner to import into Italy: 2 parrots (from the large species) and 4 from smaller species supplemented with a Health Certificate, issued by a veterinary service of the country, where the birds have been taken from confirm that: country of origin is free from psittacosis; or birds have been kept for 6 months prior to departure under State veterinary control in a breeding park (zoological garden) and that in the territory within a 20 km no case of psittacosis happened during the last year.

The following are pets prohibited for import: aviary ornamental birds from all states infected with Avian influenza.

It is important to identify each pet with the help of microchip that should comply with ISO Standard 11784 or Annex A to ISO standard 11785. Anyhow the pet will need to be sent with its own scanner fixed to the top of the crate.

All pets need to have full vaccinations: for dogs:  distemper, hepatitis, parvo, leptospirosis, (DHLPP) and rabies within the last 12 months or a minimum of 4 weeks before entry; for cats:  feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia (FVRCP), and rabies within the last 12 months or a minimum of 4 weeks before entry.

EU Vet Health Certificate (Form EC#: 998). This is the standard Health Certificate to be filled out by the accredited veterinarian of the owner. This certificate is valid for 4 months prior to departure date.
USDA Endorsement: The below referenced forms: Microchip Implantation Record; Rabies Certificate; Vet Letter; EU Vet Health Certificate must be sent to the local USDA for their stamp of approval. 

All original documents must travel with pets.
