Pet Import Requirement in Austria

Dogs and cats are allowed importation if accompanied by the required documentation.

Required import documents include: Health and Vaccination Certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian. The certificate must include: Name and address of the owner; animal’s breed, sex, age and color. Date of inoculation against rabies, brand of the vaccine recognized by the U.S. Public Health Service, name of producer and production code. The rabies vaccine must be administered at least 30 days, but not more than 12 months before the pet’s entry into Austria.

Cats and dogs must have a certified rabies vaccination before they are allowed to enter Austria. This vaccination must normally have been administered at least 30 days before arrival in Austria. Also it may not be more than one year old. A vaccination certificate issued by the veterinarian who administered the vaccination will be accepted as evidence of vaccination.

As with the case of most EU countries, Austria is a member of the Pet Travel Scheme which allows pet carnivores (dogs, cats and ferrets) from any of the countries covered by the scheme to enter the country without quarantine provided they meet specified anti-rabies, blood sampling and anti-worm/anti-tick hygiene requirements. No more than five animals per person may be brought into the country.

Generally, to qualify for the scheme, the pet must:
1. Be fitted with a microchip.
2. Be vaccinated against rabies at least 30 days before entering Austria but no longer than one year in advance.
3. Be blood tested to check the effectiveness of the Rabies vaccination.
4. Be issued with an Official Pet Passport (or a Pet Travel Scheme Certificate).

The vaccination certificate must be in German or be accompanied by an officially certified German translation. Most local authorities in Austria levy taxes or duties on dogs.
